He watched the mug, turning it once or twice in his hand before finally setting it back on the table closer to him. Glancing at the squad leader before grunting, he had hoped the woman had something on the Titan as far as Levi was aware all she did was do research on these sort of things it was possible Hanji could come up with something before the trial or he was just being hopeful. Levi wasn't sure which. There was a silence that hung in the room as he took to staring at nothing in particular, his expression showing no real emotion other then his usual stare but he felt something, it was a tight pull in his chest. He felt detached as if he was alone in the room, he knew that he wasn't, Hanji was sitting a few chairs away but there was a warmth he had felt that was now left empty. Cold. Slowly the man stood, taking both cup and mug to clean them out himself. Normally he would have left his cup to have someone else take care of it, and of course it would get his personal inspection the next morning but he wanted an activity to busy his mind.

Levi hesitated for a moment before putting Petra's mug away, he held it in his hand, thumb gently tracing over the handle before finally placing it in the cabinet next to his without another glance. Turning back to the open mess area he glanced at the squad leader a final time before sighing "Tell me if you find anything." he kept it short as he only slowed his walk to speak before continuing out of the room and into the hall. He kept enough focus in order to not bump or brush against anything as he walked, the coldness that came from within causing him to adjust the dress jacket he had on before climbing the stairs. In truth the man hadn't felt this way since the day he and Petra had returned from the expedition, the sense of loss was not only in his mind but he physically felt it. Upon reaching the top step he glanced at his room, which was the first door in the line before passing it completely.

He stopped at her door, carefully turning the handle before entering and closing the door tightly behind him. He could tell the difference in cold that he felt then the actual cold of the room considering it hadn't been used much. Petra had spent all her nights with him and her bed remained neatly made. Levi slowly walked over, allowing his fingertips to brush against the corner. Petra's pillow still had a light indent from where her head had rested in previous nights, more then likely long imprinted from before the expedition. His eyes hardened suddenly as he looked towards the other end of the room towards her desk which was surprisingly kept clean around the bottom from loose paper, something he had reprimanded her on multiple occasions. For once Levi wished the floor was full of discarded papers with her writing on it, paper crumpled by her own hand. But Levi wished a lot of things. The corporal was going to turn, leave the room for his own when something caught his eye on the top of the desk. He walked across the room to a neatly folded paper in the center of the desk. His own name stared back at him in handwriting he instantly recognized, centered in the middle of the folded paper. Levi waited a moment before slowly reaching for the it his eyebrows knitting together in the slightest. Was this something she had left him to find? They didn't keep much from the other, if something had concerned her enough he assumed Petra would tell him directly, rather then this. Slowly he slid a finger under the fold, lifting to reveal a neatly written letter. Grey eyes quickly scanning the words before him.

Liebster Levi,

I write this letter not knowing if I'll see you before my trial and I can only hope I don't regret what I'm about to write.

You are the only know who believes me when I say I am innocent, and the only know who knows I am. That is the only comfort I have; you are the only comfort I have. In a way, it hurts that this is the case. Not even my father believes I am innocent, and I still feel the judging stares of the civilians. As hard as I try to maintain a positive outlook on this, the evidence is stacked high against me and I don't expect to come return home after the trial has concluded. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry I've failed the Survey Corps, humanity, and those I love. But most of all, I've failed you as a comrade, squad member... and as a lover.

Here is where I fear I've said too much as a subordinate, but I don't know if I'll ever get the chance to tell you as of now. The moments we have shared together, most of them short-lived, have always left me with the feeling of a young teenager struck by love. And I realize now, a little too late, that I have fallen in love with you. I wish I had possessed the courage to tell you in person, and now that I have thought about it, this might be my biggest regret. I'm sorry you had to read it after I have been put into jail and not hear it in my own voice. I don't know what the future may hold for me, for us, but know that I will always be with you.

Immer deins,

Petra Ral

Levi's jaw had tightened to the point of a dull ache as he finished the letter, slowly he turned towards Petra's bed, originally one hand had been gripping the paper but now both held the letter as if it was going to disappear. The man sat down slowly, his eyes going over each word of his lover's true thoughts on the situation she was currently in. She didn't voice this to him, she never told him she didn't think she would return. Had Petra worried she would upset him, he would think her weak? Or did she know he was useless, had she already decided he wasn't going to be able to protect her. Her captain hadn't been able to protect her and her squad from the female titan what would make her think he would do it now. Levi hissed a curse as his eyes narrowed, re-reading the letter for a third time when something finally read the one sentence, the one sentence that gave meaning to the feeling in his chest 'And I realize now, a little too late that I have fallen in love with you' she loved him. She did love him. Love wasn't something he even believed in, he couldn't possibly. The idea of love was a luxury soldiers didn't have and more importantly couldn't afford. In his line of work a soldier was only allowed to love humanity. But as Levi read the line over, as his hands felt cold and wet with sweat, as his eyes focused on the word Love he realized then. Levi had loved Petra. He was in love with her. The feelings he had around the woman, the warmth she brought him. he thought back to the moment he saw her riding up to the survey corps checkpoint weeks ago when he had thought she had long since died with the rest of the squad. The feeling it brought him to have her in his bed that night, to be one with her that morning or any time after that. The deep hurt he felt when she had her outburst against him. It was because he had fallen in love with Petra Ral.

Levi took in another breath of air, his thumb slowly going over the name at the bottom of the letter. He was the one who was too late in realizing this, time and time again Levi had been late. Had he truly comforted her in what little time they had together? He needed her now, he wanted to hold her, tell her everything he hadn't before. The man wanted to hear those words from her lips rather then words on papers. He wanted to tell her he loved her. But the corporal sat, alone in her room, on her bed and again he re-read the Letter.

She had run out of tears to cry after only her first day in her jail cell. She had also grown numb to the musty basement of the prison, the only thing to keep her company was a soldier watching her cell. They switched out on shifts every so often, but that was the only thing she had noticed about them. Now she barely noticed a change, her body usually facing the wall away from the bars on the firm and uncomfortable cot that was in the cell. That was another thing she had, unfortunately, grown used to. Petra missed the warmth of an actual bed and actual blankets, and with three days effectively alone with nothing but her thoughts, she had already began to miss the comfort of her lover.

He was there, keeping her from feeling a sense being alone. When she had him, she didn't think about the failure of the expedition nearly as much as she would have had he not been there. But she now had nothing to distract her from those thoughts and she hated it. Her eyelids felt heavy from a lack of sleep, but she would be jarred from any sleep she seemed to fall into only an hour or so later. Every time she seemed to fall into a sleep, her mind would be filled with images of her squad, whether dead or alive. And that was keeping her from rest. Second to that, there was an ache in her stomach and coupled with her lack of sleep, she didn't find the energy to eat what was given her. Sure, she would eventually move to eat or drink what was given to her, but most of her motivation was gone. Whatever recovery she had taken from the 57th Expedition, it had left. She shifted slowly on her cot, but only to adjust her position to stare at the bricked wall in front of her. Petra blinked, her thoughts returning to her supposed crimes and her charges, along with the evidence. Everything was stacked against her and she had no one else but Levi and Hanji to back her up. Her father didn't believe her, and she doubted the commander of the Survey Corps would be any help in her trial. She curled tighter into herself, tears that refused to fall from her eyes making themselves known. No, she wasn't coming home from this.

Three days, three days he had busied himself with odd things around the headquarters, cleaning more then was necessary, writing reports that had been long since over due. None of this took away the empty feeling in his chest, But it kept his mind from wandering during the day. Though at night she was all the corporal found himself able to think of. His bed..their bed had suddenly become much larger then before and so much more empty. Through the three days they had been separated he made it a point to avoid most everyone, from the foot soldiers that busied themselves occasionally around the headquarters to even Hanji herself, Levi kept his distance. Though the man did stop in his busy travels back and forth around the building, finding a quiet spot to sit and read the letter that had been left him. He could almost recite every word by heart, pin point where she had written more heavy then in other spots. The man had read it at least twice each day, and another time before bed, her name being the last thing he wanted to see before he attempted to get some form of rest. Which usually came in sharp, short spurts that left him in a cold sweat.

All of this lead up to where he was now, moving with the rock of the carriage as it pulled up to the main building. Levi's eyes looked over each word of the letter again as the cab came to a jerking stop which caused him to slowly look up and out the window to his side. In one quick motion he folded the paper, placing it neatly into his pocket before swinging the cab door open. Squinting for a moment from the sun he stepped down with a grunt, looking up when someone had cleared their throat though his eyes instantly hardened. the commander stared back at him, arms crossed over his chest with a noticeable frown "Levi you are suppose to inform me when you make visits to the prisoner." the man sighed, watching the shorter man walk right past him and into the building. "It must have slipped my mind." he offered, glancing back to the man before continuing down a narrow hallway. Erwin picked up his pace to follow the brisk corporal as they turned towards a flight of stairs. "I don't need an escort Erwin." his voice echo'd off the walls as the both descended, though the other man made a sigh, seeming to not respond.

Coming up to a thick wooden door, which also had more bars then were truly necessary. Levi was getting tired of the ridiculous precautions though he didn't voice it, simply opening the door. He noted the commander didn't follow him in, which he was grateful for though it only lasted for a short time when he noticed the other soldier in small cell room. The soldier looked up, eyes widening for a moment before quickly staring ahead with a new straightness about him. Levi barely payed him attention, looking into the dusty and dark cell as he slowly stepped forward one hand reaching out to tightly grip the bar. The corporal said nothing at first, watching Petra's form with the little light he had, his eyes glancing to the soldier next to him. He had to keep this formal, the last thing Levi had wanted was to further stack the odds against his lover. "Petra." he voiced, watching her form with an intense gaze "Its your Captain. I'm here to evaluate your condition" his voice had gone hoarse for a moment, this was hardly how he wanted to speak to her but he cleared his throat, staring intently into the darkness of the cell

She barely listened to anything that went on around her, not even the new footsteps that seemed to echo down the hall. She associated footsteps with another soldier to take the next shift, the woman adjusting to attempt at getting comfortable again. But she stopped at the sound of a familiar voice, even though it sounded oddly foreign to her at the same time. Petra shifted slightly, turning her head to look at the corporal. She didn't move for a few seconds before slowing moving to sit and stand up. The woman knew this was going to be kept formal, but she could still keep a close proximity to her lover while doing just that. It was likely the only comfort she'd be getting for awhile and she'd take it, for what it was worth.

She slowly made her way to the barred side of the cell, lightly gripping the bar just under his hand when she was close enough. "I'm fine, Levi." She muttered, her gaze shifting to something else in the room. Petra was lying through her teeth and she knew it. She was far from fine, she knew it. All the woman wanted was to wrap her arms around the man on the other side of the bars, to accept whatever comfort he had to give and tell him what she hadn't had the courage to tell him before. Her grip tightened on the bar in front of her and she bit her lip, tears that still refused to fall still stinging in her eyes.

Levi watched her form move slightly through the dark of the cell, his eyes catching her face in the dim light that lit the wall behind him, it wasn't an easy feat considering she was a good distance from the bars to her cot. His grip on the bar tightened as she rose, his eyes never once leaving her as Petra made her way over to him. The corporal examined her, from her face down as she approached though his eyes slowly found her face. Her eyes were tired, that much he could tell, he knew she wouldn't be getting any sleep, the woman had hardly gotten sleep when she was with him. The idea that all this was happening because of false accusations caused Levi's blood to boil, they were pointing fingers and someone had happened to point in Petra's direction. It infuriated him.

Though he visibly tried to hide his anger, his eyes blinking to watch her hand grip the bar. subtly his hand lowered, connecting their two hands in the lightest of touch. She was cold, the feeling made him ridged. When she spoke he bit back the urge, holding his tongue for a moment to let the irritation pass. She wasn't fine, Levi didn't know if she said that because of the soldier or for himself but he knew she wasn't fine, he could see it in the woman's eyes. "Good to hear" he practically seethed, his eyes conveying the exact opposite. She was so close, but all he could manage was a small touch. "Be sure to eat and rest within the next few days. You'll need it. The idea of you being associated with the female type titan is nothing short of ridiculous" he muttered, still searching her eyes with his own, he knew she wasn't going to get food nor sleep. "Remember what I said. There's no need for regrets" Levi's jaw tightened before he looked to their hands, before slowly back to Petra.

She didn't look back to him until she felt the light contact of their two hands. Her now-dull hazel eyes looked from their hands and then to his face again. His next words almost made her want to chuckle; Petra probably would have if she wasn't stuck in her current situation, despite his almost obvious irritation. He knew she was lying and half of it was in fact because of the soldier, the other half in a vain attempt to get him to not worry about her as much. But she nodded, keeping her eyes on him for the time being. "I will. Like I said, I'm fine." Again she was lying to herself and to Levi, but he knew what she meant. She already knew she wasn't going to get a good night's sleep, and eating was debatable. Maybe she would try when Levi had left, more for his sake than hers.

Her eyes met his at the next thing that was said and she pressed her lips together, swallowing the lump in her throat. Petra wasn't stupid, no. She already knew what he was referring to; he had already found and read the letter she had left him, the last things she couldn't find room to say before she was arrested. And still she regretted not finding it in herself to tell him beforehand, her grip on the bar tightened. "I...I know." She muttered, her voice barely above a whisper as she put her head against the metal bars of the cell. She should have told him before she was arrested, told him the morning after the expedition. There had been many opportunities, and she regretted letting each of them slip through her hands.

Hoping his small emphasis had been made clear for the time being, he glanced towards the soldier who once again seemed to straighten. For a moment he wondered if he would listen if he ordered the man out..or if he forced the man out both were options that had crossed his mind multiple times since he had entered the small cell block. He turned to look at the woman again when she spoke, the hand at his side twitched forward when Petra pressed her head against the bars. Though he had to stop himself, as much as he wanted to be selfish, to easily reach out through the bars and hold his lover. He couldn't. Levi could imagine a report being made by the soldier, any authority Levi would have as her captain in the court room would be disregarded as biased. All the corporal could do was lean forward slightly, the grip on the bar once again tightening to almost whiten his knuckles. Even through the dark of the cell and the bad lighting he could see her face, it was still innocent to him, it always was. Her face was always a contrast to whatever situation she was put in, situations she didn't deserve to be put into. Yet continuously something was trying to strip that from her.

Levi shifted forward more, leaning against the bars as he watched her, his eyes took on a soft stare. There was nothing he could do, there was never anything he could do for Petra he was always too late. That's where he stayed as a few minutes past, having what he could of her presence and the light touch of her hand against his. The sound of the door opening cause him to look over, though he didn't move from his spot. The commander walked in, giving the two a stare before sighing and looking back out the way he came "your visiting time is limited with a high profile prisoner. Corporal." The silence was thick as Levi had turned his attention back to Petra, the soldier was starting to look uneasy again. "Another bullshit order you're following commander?" The other man said nothing, staring at the two before turning and leaving. "I'll be at the trial, Petra. You still have my support. Remember, eat and rest." Slowly he stepped back, having to clear his throat from how hoarse it had gotten. There was so much more Levi needed to say. But he couldn't. Keeping his eyes on her for another moment, he turned the effort it took him to leave the room was heavy. Upon exiting his eyes fell on the commander, instantly hardening "why wasn't I updated on her condition, I have a fucking right to that. You're keeping her in filth" he walked by the taller man, briskly climbing the stairwell with a new fire. Erwin watched as he passed before sighing. "It must have slipped my mind.." The words echo'd to Levi who paused on the steps for a moment, his body growing ridged before he continued back up the stairs.

She didn't take her focus off of Levi, watching his movements carefully. The woman knew that if the soldier on the other side of the bars wasn't there, this meeting would be going differently, and maybe then she would be able to tell him. Just the simple fact that she didn't was beginning to eat away at her and there was still no way of telling if she would be able to get out of this innocent and alive, or guilty and as a corpse. Petra noticed his shifted closer to the bars, noting the soft look in his usually hard eyes. She gave him a weak smile that, although short-lived and barely genuine, it was her way of assuring she would be fine until the trial. Even if it was a lie to herself and to him. Her thumb lightly brushed over his fingers, but her eyes shifted as the door opened and a familiar voice broke the silence. She winced at being called a high-profile prisoner. Petra was barely that; she was just a soldier who was fighting for humanity. Her attention shifted back to Levi, leaning her head away from the bars to nod.

"Thank you, L-...Corporal." She had barely remembered that they still had to put on the act of captain and subordinate, and she hated it. "I will.." Petra muttered, her eyes still focused on Levi as he turned to leave. She didn't push away from the bars until the heavy barred door closed, the woman standing for a few seconds more before turning to return to her cot. Slowly she moved to lay back into its uncomfortable mattress, covering her mouth as tears that had been held back finally fell from her eyes. "I love you... dammit, I love you." She muttered, her voice barely audible enough to pick up through her covered mouth. Those three words were repeated until they barely sounded like words to her anymore, her tears only coming more frequently the more the words came. Her shoulders shook with barely noticable sobs.

I love you.

~*~

Her time in the cell felt like an eternity, and it almost burned her eyes to see something other than darkness. She barely had the motivation to walk; she knew she had the energy, but it was a matter of finding it. Petra had taken Levi's advice...or was it more of a request? She didn't know; she ate only a little more after his visit, but sleep was still debatable. It had come, sure, but only in the spurts she was now used to. She was sure she looked like Hell, despite how she was given fresh clothes and other things. The woman may have been a so-called prisoner, a criminal and a treasonist, but they weren't out to treat her like complete dirt. The only reason she may have looked like Hell was likely in her eyes, both tired with a hint of hyper alertness. The rest of her features may have held more hints, moreso to her mental condition over her physical.

Petra heard the dull drone of a soldier going over her crimes and supposed actions she had taken on the 57th Expedition as two others guided her to the court room. Her once bright eyes were trained on the floor, her brow furrowed somewhat as she barely picked up what was being said. She didn't care; she was only going to hear it all over again from the Generalissimo, along with her sentence if she was found guilty. That alone was enough to make her more apprehensive than usual; she didn't know why it was even kept vague from her. She knew, from when she was younger and still a trainee, most sentences to treason ended in execution. There wasn't much use keeping the obvious from her, and whether it was for her benefit or not, she didn't know.

Her gaze only turned up again when the large doors to the courtroom opened. She sucked in a breath, swallowing the lump that had formed to her throat as she was only guided further into the room, the doors closing soon behind them. She didn't need to stop her gaze on every person in the room to know that the Garrison and Military Police thought they had a right to attend the trial for a Survey Corps soldier. It wasn't their business, although apparently they had thought so as she listened to the hushed whispers from the two military branches as they reached her ears. A nervous feeling settled in the pit of her stomach, the woman tensing somewhat as she was stopped at the center of the room. Her eyes were set forward, still not looking at anything in particular. However, she did shift her gaze to where the Survey Corps was seated in the room, her eyes lingering before she felt herself being pushed down, perhaps rougher than necessary due to her somewhat ridged posture. She didn't try resisting further as her knees eventually hit the smooth floor, looking back when her cuffed hands were pulled back, the chain positioned on a small pedestal before a heavy metal pole was brought down to keep the chains down, and the woman now understood. Petra's eyes turned back to the floor, giving a single useless tug against her new binds. It was stupid to even think about getting out of this so easily, but she barely thought it was necessary to keep her weighed down.

It was long and unnecessary, all of it was. Right down to the gathering of curious on lookers outside of the building. They couldn't get close enough to view but the rounding of high standing officials in the three branches were bound to gain attention as well as the news of this so called traitor. Levi had rode with Hanji, though he hardly spoke or even looked at the woman throughout the short ride. And now his already irritated expression worsened as he exited the carriage, he was starting to get tired of using those as transportation. Another obvious sigh slipped through his lips as he adjusted the ascot around his neck and brushed off his uniform, it was the first time he had worn it since his leave though it wasn't entirely a welcomed experience having the tight straps back on. Not bothering to wait for the woman in the cab he walked forward towards the door when another presence to his side elicited another sigh. "Squad leader Hanji. Corporal." The commanders greeting went ignored by Levi, who hardly glanced in his direction. His mind had been with Petra the moment he left her the day of his visit. He wondered if she had eaten, the rest he knew was a lot to ask of her, Levi hardly slept himself, the continuous sting of his eyes was a reminder of that. The corporal found it hard to go to bed and wake up without her next to him, it had been such a ritual for so many mornings straight the loss of it had an effect on him. Levi had never needed anyone other then himself for years. Petra so suddenly came into his life he hardly had time to think of what she meant to him. Now he knew and she was kept from him. He loved her. Levi needed Petra in every sense. But as he so often was he was late to realize this. And now they were forced apart.

Levi had totally ignored the two that he apparently had to walk with, if anything they were walking with him as the short man took to ignoring everything but what was in front of him. "Levi I know how you're feeling right now but, you're letting your feelings get the better of you. Attachments ar-.." The commander was cut off by the abrupt stop of the corporal who halted in the middle of a long hallway, a few soldiers were filing into the room ahead of them now but the commanders eyes were now on the un-moving man. "Don't fucking start with that attachment bullshit again." He spoke, the commander's jaw tightened at the words "you couldn't possibly know how I feel so don't act like you do, Erwin." Levi turned to look back at the tall blonde, he had known the man for a long time. He seen how the survey corps commander worked in the most efficient ways and always got results. Levi never questioned it. Not until it became personal. "You could have done something about this. I know you could have. You're full of shit to say you couldn't." Levi glanced at the woman and the man before turning back around "if Petra is found guilty at the end of this.." His eyes hardened before he took a step forward to the door "I'm blaming you." He stated curtly before briskly entering the open court room to take his seat where the survey corps had made their section. Erwin came soon after, his lips were a hard line as the blonde slowly sat down next to The corporal. "You're being ridiculous." He spoke, there was an edge in his voice Levi noted before staring ahead at the pillar in the center of the room. "Us having to be here is ridiculous." He retorted which was then met with silence. Leaning back against the chair he crossed one leg over the other, already hard stare seeming to worsen when his arms were crossed tightly across his chest.

The courtroom had taken on a dull roar as the different branches filed in. He watched as eyes focused on him only to quickly look away or whisper to whoever was next to them. 'he picked a traitor for his squad' or ' humanities strongest harbored humanities traitor!' he could care less about the ridicule, what he wanted was to see Petra. Slowly everyone settled in, both the stationary guard and the military police were on the opposite of the Legion and all eyes were on them as they waited. When the court room doors reopened again the room fell into a light hush. Levi instinctively leaned forward upon seeing her, he knew Erwin was staring at him now but his eyes never left the woman as they brought her to the center. He watched as she looked in the survey corp's direction, Levi wondered if she was looking for him, the thought made him tense. His eyes widened slightly when they had locked her down, looking back at Erwin "why the hell do they need to lock her down like that" he hissed, though the commander looked just as surprised. "It is a bit extreme." He answered. Levi grunted, turning back to look at Petra, his stare worsening "extreme my ass, it's cruel and unusual" the corporal watched her, giving anything to shield her from the stares, from the whispers, from the scoffs. But he could only sit. Sit and observe.

Hanji was stifling yawns the entire way to the trial house, not entirely affected by the lack of conversation on the way with the corporal. She hid it well, though, even though it was likely Levi wasn't going to care in the first place, unless she told him directly. In honestly, she was hardly getting sleep from gathering what she could about the Female Titan. She didn't believe Petra was behind the failure of the expedition; it went farther than the Survey Corps and deeper than she anticipated, considering most of her searches ended with nothing to show and nothing gathered. The reports had almost nothing to show other than the Titan was sentient and that much was obvious. But she still searched, not only for Levi's sake but for her friend's sake.

She was jolted from her thoughts when the carriage rolled to a stop. Looking up, the woman waited until the man exited the cab before leaving it herself. She blinked, adjusting her glasses as she followed still, only looking up again when the two were addressed by Erwin. She only gave a small nod. "Erwin." Her response was short, but she had nothing else to say. Usually her mouth would still be running about something or another, despite the situation, but she still found her energy drained from the lack of sleep. Still she followed them, only stopping when Levi halted his walk into the courtroom. Hanji watched Levi, glancing at Erwin shortly before returning her gaze to Levi. She sighed; both were being pretty ridiculous, but she didn't share her opinion to either as they continued into the courtroom. The woman took the seat on the other side of Erwin, shifting to get comfortable before glancing at the blonde. "You're better off dropping your issue over his... 'attachments'." She said lowly, her voice calm with a bitter note. She may not have had the greatest understanding of what Levi and Petra had and what they were going through, but it had affected them both to a point. She looked forward again as the courtroom was silenced, blinking as Petra was brought into the room and forced down to be restrained. She listened to what Erwin and Levi had to say before putting in her own input. "In retrospect, they think they're doing the right thing. Don't forget they think she's a treasonist and a murderer. It's not unusual to lock down someone accused of those crimes." She fell silent as the sound of a gaval brought even the quietest whispers to a halt.

Petra barely adjusted her position, her eyes narrowing at the ground when the signal for the trial to start echoed around the room. She figured, at this point, a sense of dread would be settling in but she felt irritation. Whether it was from the hushed whispers she had heard before the room was silenced or her current position, and possibly her supposed crimes, she wasn't entire sure. But instead she moved to sit up straighter, her brows furrowed and her eyes holding a certain glint despite how tired they were as she looked up to the Generalissimo at the head of the room. The man looked back down at her before turning his attention to the papers in front of him, clearing his throat. "Petra Ral. This is another interesting case, isn't it?" He said, putting down the papers. "I'm sure you may be aware, but this trial will be held under military, not civilian, law." The high commander took another glance at the paper in front of him, before returning his gaze to Petra. "Petra Ral, you are accused of the murder of Gunther Schulz, Erd Gin and Auruo Bossard. You are also charged with the highest treason against humanity, for assisting the Female Titan in capturing Eren Yeager. If you are found guilty by the end of this trial, your crimes will be punishable by execution." Zackley paused, his words lingering in the silence that followed. The woman being held down didn't seem to react, but she had winced at the punishment. "How do you plead: guilty or not guilty?" Petra blinked at the question, glancing to the Survey Corps' side of the room before giving an answer. "Not guilty." Her words were loud and clear despite her state and she shifted again to sit even straighter, her answer eliciting another wave of whispers from the Garrison and Military Police.

Levi hardly moved from his ridged position, his jaw was tight and his eyes were forward, being the only movement as he observed the room. Lingering on Petra mostly he would look towards to meet the gaze of a poor Military Police of Garrison soldier who happened to glance in his direction. Then to Erwin who gave him continuos looks, the commander obviously thought he was going to say something out of line, possibly do something. Levi wouldn't do something to compromise Petra, as much as he would have liked to. The sound of the gavel ended the whispers and the stares as all eyes quickly turned the the Generalissimo. Levi however kept his gaze on Petra as the man spoke, heading what was to be discussed throughout the trial. The word execution hung in the air, leaving it stale and thick, the idea of it sickened Levi, his hand balled into a tight fist, subtly clenching and Un-clenching to calm his ever growing anger. Feeling a shift next to him, grey eyes met hard and stern ones as Erwin watched him, it wasn't hard to pick up on the obvious further tension in the small corporal. Though Levi didn't hold the stare, only continuing the motions with his hand. Upon her plead and the eruption of whispers that followed, the earlier staleness came flowing back into the room, it was choked and lingering. He didn't look when Erwin stood then, clearing his throat in the authoritative manner that he heard all too often "Erwin Smith, thirteenth commander of the survey corps, speaking as representation of the Legion who is taking a neutral stand in this trial" another series of whispers broke the momentary silence, like gossiping children the soldiers leaned to each other or nudged one another. "In light of this I give my floor position to Lance Corporal Levi to speak in Ral's defense." there was another series of whispers as Erwin sat back in seat.

Levi's eyes widened in the slightest, though he was quick to recover. He hadn't been expecting that..at all. He hadn't planned to have the whole floor, he had written a detailed report, submitted to Erwin the day prior for the commander himself to edit and speak. Though the blonde, who was now seated didn't look at him again, staring straight ahead with the usual determined look. Levi shrugged it off, though it gave him a new tremendous advantage to convince the court and the Generalissimo of her innocence, it was still because of Erwin, Petra was in this situation. He stood then, a look of disinterest was shot across the courtroom as the gaze lingered on Petra, then to the head of the court. It wasn't easy, even for him to hide his anger but he managed as he adjusted the ascot around his neck with a precise hand. "As the commander mentioned I'm speaking in her defense." He added emphasis to 'defense' which added a series of whispers. "As Petra Ral's direct commanding officer as well as her Captain I am here to dismiss these...ludicrous accusations against one of my soldiers." He hated public speaking, he had far more choice words to describe his feelings towards the situation though he held his tongue in attempt to be professional. It was difficult. "She has been under my command since her arrival in the survey corps, she's been monitored not only by myself but as well as her fellow soldiers. She is a model soldier in both skill and loyalty. Which was the main reason she was chosen specifically. By myself. To be apart of the special operation squad, to protect Eren Yeager. " he paused, allowing his words to settle throughout the courtroom. "She along with the rest of her squad followed orders, which was destined for failure because of the fruitlessness of the expedition itself. There was no alarm for suspicious activity from Petra Ral even up to her squad being dispatched." His eyes hardened on the Generalissimo as his mouth formed a hard line "the only reason we are all crammed in here to begin with is because of a strained and desperate excuse to find a reason for the expeditions failure as well as the unnecessary death of countless soldiers and the blame fell on a mentally traumatized and physically injured soldier. Written proof of both of these diagnoses have been submitted to you already." He stood, already hearing the regretful sigh of Erwin though Levi made no move to look at the man. "That is all. Any questions pertaining to my reasoning. sir?"

Hanji frowned slightly at the word 'execution'. As far as she was concerned, this only made matters...worse. She knew they weren't ones to stall on executions if they ever came up, and it only made Petra's situation worse. She sighed, glancing down before looking back up at Petra's plead and the sudden wave of hushed whispers. It was something to be expected and she wouldn't be surprised if another soldier outside of the Survey Corps would put their input on the matter. She glanced up when Erwin stood to speak, but instead gave the floor to Levi. The woman's gaze shifted to Levi for a few seconds before it returned forward.

Petra continued to stare at the Generalissimo, but she turned her full attention to Levi when he started to speak in her defense. Her eyes only softened a fraction as she watched him. Despite the lack of his usual colorful vocabulary that would usually betray his mood, she could still tell he held a certain anger still. Adjusting her position, her attention only shifted back to the Generalissimo as Levi's did. She could tell he was considering Levi's words, but her gaze shifted to the other side of the room when the sound of a chair scraping against the flooring made itself apparent. Her eyes narrowed further when she realized that, apparently, the commanders of the other branches were permitted to have a say in the trial that really had nothing to do with their branch, even though she wasn't a threat to begin with.

"Nile Dok, commander of the Military Police." Said commander spoke as he stood, fixing his jacket before returning his arms to his sides. "Corporal, as you should know, all high-ranking officers from the other branches have read the reports from your failed expedition." His eyes shifted to Erwin for a few short seconds before returning them to Levi. "You say there was no alarm for suspicious activty from Ral, even when your 'Special Operations Squad' was dispatched," The way he said the name of the squad was borderlining mocking, "But you have no way of knowing what had happened after your squad was dispatched." Another wave of whispers went through the room, mostly from the Garrison and Military Police sides of the courtroom. "We wouldn't be here in the first place if there wasn't reason for suspicious activity."

The woman tensed visibly when the commander of the Military Police decided he thought he could have an opinion, but it was expected in a trial of this level. She wanted until he was done talking before turning slightly to glance at him. "Do you think you have any way of knowing what happened after my squad was dispatched either?" Her eyes narrowed into a glare. "Your branch has no way of knowing what goes on outside of the walls, period. Don't try to act like you do; reports are hardly anything to go by when you haven't truly seen what's behind the walls. Or even what's happened when the walls were breached." She turned her attention back to the front of the room, looking at nothing in particular as the whispers only seemed to pick up from the momentary silence that hung in the room. "You sound like an idiot when you point fingers at something you can't even begin to understand."

Levi remained standing above his chair, he had noted Erwin had moved to sit on the edge of his seat now, it was apparent he was mildly anxious and still. For what, Levi hardly knew, the commander took a neutral stand on his own accord, the shorter man couldn't see why his posture was so ridged if he had no opinion on the matter as he stated so many times. The corporal turned his attention back to the generalissimo though it didn't last long as the sound of chair legs scrapping back carried across the room. His eyes hardened, he didn't have to look to know who it was, the commander of the military police never failed to have a say in any of the trials he attended. Without fail the man would say his word even if it had no place. The hand at his side drew into a tight fist as he looked over to the commander as he was addressed, jaw tightly growing in tension. He felt Erwin's stare on him now but Levi didn't take his eyes off of the military police section of the room. "Levi." It was low and only meant for the Corporal to hear, it was a quiet warning from Erwin though it went completely ignored as them man's look only seemed to grow darker. The attention didn't last long on the far side of the room, even Levi's eyes finally dropped to Petra who spoke suddenly, her words carried around the courtroom, even the whispers came to an abrupt halt, all eyes and ears now trained directly to the bound woman. Erwin let out a noticeable sigh, though his arms were crossed tightly on his chest as ever watchful eyes went from Petra, to the Generalissimo then to Levi.

Levi's eyes didn't leave her for an instant, everything she said was true, of course it was. Petra's point was one that the entire survey corps could relate to yet they were neutral, and against her as far as Levi was concerned. No one was giving her an inch, not even the branch she had served loyally who practically turned their backs on her. Yet she still defended it, even defended him. Something inside, something that he had kept wound so tight finally snapped. He had tried hard to save some face but what was the point now, when he could easily speak his mind. The hand balled into a tight fist at his side released as he ripped his eyes away from Petra once she finished to look at Dok "Give me a platoon of military police soldiers and their skill would come nowhere near the level her squad was at" Levi leaned forward, his hands now gripping the rail In front of him as he spoke, he heard another warning from Erwin but again, it went ignored. "They'd be pissing themselves as soon as the gate opened. You read the reports? How about the fucking casualty count or did you happen to skip over that. Were all of them traitors too?" He seethed, his eyes now narrowed as the grip on the rail tightened. "Instead of sitting on your asses reading about this shit, you fuckfaces should have offered to go with us." His dull eyes never left the commander, nor did his tone elevate at all as he spoke. "How about you come next time Dok. Then you can have an opinion when a  Titanic bitch eats your ass and shits you back out again. Might be an improvement" the courtroom fell silent again, No one daring to say a word as there was a pause. Another chair being pushed back broke the silence as Erwin stood, a hand reaching to tightly grip Levi's shoulder as he motioned him to sit. "That will be all from the survey corps for now. " he spoke out towards the courtroom. The whispers didn't start until Levi sat back down, arms crossing over his chest again as his hand took to clenching and un-clenching.

Erwin sat down soon after him, the blonde's jaw was tight as he looked sternly over at Levi who refused to look at him. His grey eyes were still drilling into Nile Dok. " I want five minutes with that fucker. Just five minutes." though Levi's tone had only elevated slightly, it wasn't hard for Erwin to pick up the venomous vibe each word had. Erwin hadn't seen the corporal this mad in a long time, but he still had to somehow control the small man from leaping over the railing at the other commander. "Levi.." he spoke carefully, leaning over to keep the conversation between them "Think of Petra in all this." he said it quick, and it wasn't much. But it was the wrong thing. Levi tensed again with a sharp intake of air "and what the fuck do you think I've been doing? sitting with my thumb up my ass? She is my damn priority, I don't need your dumb ass comments to remind me of that, Erwin." he focused ahead again, now ignoring the survey corps commander completely. He knew full well his words were compromising, the attention of the soldiers around the room continued to look back and forth between the military police commander and the corporal. That's what Levi had wanted, though Erwin still seemed mortified at him the commotion took the pressure off of Petra and her own comments.

The Generalissimo nodded at the woman's plea; it was to be expected, but he really didn't have a large opinion on the plea. He was to keep a neutral stand on the trial, mostly by his own choice. Taking to looking at the Survey Corps, even he was surprised the branch was going to take a neutral stand on the trial, especially when one of their own was on the line. Though he didn't voice it, he found it ironic they were more than willing to take the side of an unpredictable teen who could shift into a Titan seemingly at will, but less than willing to actually defend one of their own. But still he stayed quiet, watching as the corporal stood to speak in Petra's defense.

His attention shifted back to the woman as Levi spoke, glancing back to the corporal every so often. At some point he glanced down at the medical release papers he had separate from the reports from the 57th Expedition. It was true that she was written off as mentally traumatized and physically injured, which was one reason he leaned towards the woman's plea of innocence. About to open his mouth to respond, the scraping sound of a chair made itself apparent in the room and his attention turned to the Military Police. He had no change of facial expression as the commander spoke, giving his own opinion on the matter. Zackley was almost expecting them to throw in their own two cents, but he didn't expect it to be so early on in the trial. As Nile spoke, his words directed to the Corporal, he kept his focus on the woman in the center of the room. Ever since the trial started, she had shown no signs of actual submission despite her position. If anything, Dok's words only made her tense up further. And it practically felt like a repeat of Eren's trial as she spoke up the moment the commander fell silent.

He practically sighed, although it was inaudible. The Generalissimo barely had any authority over the room anymore and he should have expected the corporal to pipe up a second time. His words were directed towards Nile and him alone and he should have expected it, again. As soon as the corporal finished and Erwin said it would be enough from the Survey Corps, his attention shifted back towards the Military Police. He grabbed the gaval, hitting it against the desk to silence Nile who was ready to bite back at the Survey Corps. "That will be enough from the Military Police as well." He didn't take his eyes off of the branch until the commander had taken his seat again. "This trial isn't about who should have went on the expedition," His eyes shifted to Levi shortly, "And the way you two are taking it, I might have to ask you to leave." Zackley sighed, fixing the reports in front of him to pick out the report Erwin had written for the soldier currently in question. "Petra, in... 'your' report, you covered how your squad was killed. Is there any way you can shed more light on that?"

Petra's attention shifted to Levi a second time when he spoke out against Nile, the woman staying silent at a quiet realization of what he was attempting to do. She knew her outburst was far out of place, as usually the person on trial is supposed to keep quiet until they are spoke to, whether it be who's heading it or another high-ranking officer. But she tore her gaze from Levi when the sound of a gaval echoed around the room, the woman looking forward again at the Generalissimo. He seemed none too happy about the sudden outbursts from anyone in the room, and she seemingly frown when his attention was turned back to her. His request only caused her to tense up a second time, and she definitely should have expected a turn like this. But she had no choice but to oblige, lest she get accused for another ludicrous thing like withholding information. "I can." She said, her hazel eyes quickly glancing to Levi before she began.

"We had seen the retreat signal given by Erwin and we were heading back to our horses to get back into formation whenever we could. Erd was leading us, considering he was our second-in-command and when we saw another signal flare, a green one, Gunther was ordered to fire one." She paused, sighing quietly. "We assumed it was our captain trying to find us, and as 'he' came up to us, it was realized too late that we were baited into a trap. They killed Gunther shortly after we realized, cutting his neck open." The woman recalled his death in vivid detail; it had shaken her more than she wanted to admit to the room full of people, but it was something she would admit alone. "Whoever it was, they transformed into the Female Titan shortly after. A second time, we had to keep Eren from transforming into a Titan to fight her. So we sent him ahead to leave Erd, Auruo and I to fight the Titan. Auruo and I made quick work of blinding her, but we all had to work to cut her arms to expose the back of her neck. As soon as we accomplished that, Erd moved in. We anticipated it would take a minute for her to regenerate her eyes, but... she focused on regenerating one eye and cut the time in half." She stopped for a few seconds, pressing her lips into a line. The room was silent in the time she wasn't talking. "She turned and bit Erd in half when he got close enough. I...I started panicking. The Female Titan would have crushed me against a tree if Auruo wasn't there to bring me back to my senses. I pulled the release on my gear and suffered a broken arm in the tumble. And I didn't react fast enough; I was frozen in place when the Female Titan lashed out and crushed Auruo." She stopped, looking to the floor before looking up at the Generalissimo. She left out the detail of her own guilt; she knew if she had reacted, she could have saved him. Biting her lip, Petra stole another glance at Levi. "I don't know what happened after that." She finished with that, her hazel eyes shifting to stare at something else in the room.

During the stale silence between the two men, Levi ignored the eyes that were on him now. Some soldiers gaped, quickly leaning over to whisper to one another. He gave them what they had hoped to see, he knew his reputation was sour to begin with. So of course the short tempered, violent Corporal would put on a show just as he had in the last trial. Levi was hardly moved by the whispers and the mutters that followed, it was something he was used to. The fact that his out burst seemed to negate all attention away from Petra's backtalk was all he truly cared about. That wasn't to say he was actually calm under his barking at the other man, no he was far from that, the Corporal  was  writhing in anger towards the commander of the military police, but he said enough and it had worked, no matter how much he still wanted to cut Nile down several sizes. Petra was his only concern here.

He noticed Petra looking at him then, he met her gaze for as long as she held it. Levi hoped she seen his point though he had no doubt she didn't pick up on it. Even though their connection was tied far deeper then the face value of their Captain and Subordinate relationship, he still chose her to be apart of his squad for a specific reason, her skill as well as her ability to follow orders with just a glance. She had followed under him closely before hand and knew his ticks as he knew hers. on the field it was easier to give and follow orders with eye signals with the distance apart from each other. They had mentally understood each other as soldiers and physically as lovers. With a single momentary glance he ensured she knew he was still with her.

The gavel caused him to look up when she had, his hand once again drawing into a tight fist against his chest. Erwin hadn't said another word to him since though the sideways glances and uneasy sighs were still abundant from the commander. If it was under any other circumstances he would have enjoyed seeing Erwin nervous, but Levi felt the same way for different reasons. The generalissimo's words caused him to grunt, shifting slightly in his seat as the threat to be kicked out soon followed. Levi would have to mind himself a bit better, though he would have to do what was needed of him to be sure Petra was seen as the victim here. He tensed slightly when he asked her to recall the account, his mind quickly going back to when he promised her she wouldn't have to recount it. Levi sighed before listening, it was really the first time he had heard it in complete detail then from what she relayed to Erwin when they had returned. His face darkened quickly, someone had impersonated him, his squad had thought it was him. Another sigh escaped him as he stared ahead at Petra, he felt Erwin's gaze on him again  though it didn't linger as long as the others had. He simply wanted to see the reaction from the corporal. They were caught off guard and in a scramble to fight properly, because they thought it had been him. Fury welled up in him for a moment before he attempted to continue to listen and set aside his anger.

Each of his squad member's faces played in his mind, their faces crippled by death was all he could remember them for now. It wasn't something he wanted but it was a habit he couldn't seem to shake. His gaze dropped for a moment, again, replaying the scene of the attack in his head. The pieces he was missing before fit right into the scenario he had. One that he searched for in nightmares which happened all too often. As Petra finished he relay of what happened, Levi met her gaze, it was a stern look he held before she looked away. She had to be careful what she said from now on. Levi leaned back, his muscled ached from how tense he had become but he ignored it as much he could. "Erwin." he spoke lowly, not to draw too much attention to himself. The commander had a tight jaw, he seemed to be calculating something, what that was Levi could hardly make a guess, but the blonde slowly looked over with a raised eyebrow. "I need to talk to Yeager. Hes the only other witness." Erwin didn't say a word,  looking back out towards Petra with a sigh "Eren is still a grey area with all the branches Levi, they wont take his word." He looked back over to Levi who also was now looking ahead "I can still talk to the brat can't I? Hes under my responsibilities, thanks to you. There's no harm in talking to him." the Corporal was persistent about it, his eyes grew dark as they finally tore away from Petra to look at him. "ask for a recess." Erwin sighed again for umpteenth time during the trial, his look turned stern and hard "you better be going somewhere with this Levi." waiting a moment, Erwin looked towards the Generalissimo before slowly standing. "The survey corps would like to request an extended recess. To re-evaluate our resources in this trial. " he stood ridged and unchanged. Levi hardly moved, with his hand still in a tight fist he watched Petra intently as he waited for the answer from the Generalissimo.

She barely shifted under the stares now focused on her from the conclusion of the recount of what she experienced on the 57th Expedition. She didn't have to look over everyone to know they were staring at her, probably even wondering if her words were sincere or just a placeholder from what really happened. Slowly her hazel eyes shifted back to the Generalissimo, who seemed to be watching her with the same intensity the rest of the room had to be. Petra watched the man at the head of the room turn to look down at the papers in front of him, jotting down several notes, surely about what she had to say. Slowly she shifted into a more comfortable position, her gaze moving to the floor. Despite the fact she had said the truth, she didn't feel like the odds shifted in her favor. She turned her attention back to the Survey Corps next, watching Erwin stand and request a recess from the trial. Her brows furrowed, the woman looking to Levi a few short seconds later. Her gaze was questioning, even though she knew she wouldn't get answers.

He finished jotting down several notes before looking up, about to speak before he noticed movement from the side of the Survey Corps. Zackley blinked slowly, listening to the request from Erwin. Giving a short nod, he picked up the papers in front of them and straightened them. "I'll grant the recess. I didn't think this trial would be over with in one day to begin with." He sighed, glancing at Petra before turning his attention back to Erwin. "The recess will be three days, starting tomorrow. At the beginning of the fourth day, the trial will continue and will likely conclude on that day. Court dismissed." He stood, motioning for two soldiers to come forward and take Petra back to her cell.

Petra looked up when she felt whatever was holding her back lift, two soldiers grabbing her under her arms and pulling her into a standing position. She didn't struggle; she knew if she did, it still wouldn't make her look good even though the trial was currently on recess. Frowning, she bit the inside of her cheek as she was guided out of the courtroom and she could still feel the judging stares on her even as she was out of the room, her gaze returning to the floor. The woman had faith in Levi; it had to be him who asked Erwin to request a recess. He had to have some other idea in mind if that was the case. But she didn't want to dwell too much on it. She knew he would get her out of this.

Hanji blinked to Erwin when he stood, her brow furrowing more from thought and taking in whatever happened at the short trial. But she sighed; they now had three more days to re-evaluate their resources... if Levi could get a chance to talk to Yeager. She watched as soldiers took Petra back down to the prison cells, sighing as she stood when the doors on the other side of the room closed. "I'll try and get more information on the Female Titan also... though I have no promises." She said, turning her gaze to look at Erwin and Levi.

Levi had caught the questioning stare she sent his way though he only narrowed his own eyes in the slightest in response before his neutral expression returned. Though all attention went back to the Generalissimo, his tense body relaxing in the slightest when the head of the court allowed them an extended recess though his hand remained tight against the chair. Erwin let out another sigh, exactly how many times the commander had huffed and puffed throughout the trial, he had lost count, though he slowly looked at Levi as he sat back down. "Three days is generous you better make the most of it. Corporal." he didn't bother to look at either Levi or Hanji as she spoke. Keeping his focus ahead and absently watching as Petra was taken back out of the courtroom. Levi merely shrugged, his attention was also taken by Petra's departure from the room. "anything you do find I want on my desk first Hanji." the commander glanced at the squad leader with a hard look before giving the same to Levi who had turned to glance over. "I give you a chance and you make a spectacle out of yourself and the survey corps, that's not going to happen again." the blonde then stood as the room began to file out. The Garrison should have been the first to leave, but as usual the Military police made it a point to exit first. Followed by the stationary guard. Levi watched Erwin straighten himself, which signaled the rest of the corps to rise and follow after their head.

Levi however remained seated, glancing over at Hanji "Hes pissed, what an ass." he grunted, testing his ankle for a moment before following after the swell of people trying to exit the small opening. Though Levi's mind quickly went back to the woman who had exited minutes before, replaying the last look she gave him repeatedly over in his head.

-*-

The first day of the three day recess Levi hadn't slept, spending most of the night going through multiple soldier accounts and reports of the expedition. Eye witness reports of the ones who survived. There were stacks on his small desk, barely lit by his dying fire he refused to sleep long in his bed if at all. Not till she returned he reminded himself through the night and leading onto and into the day going through paper after paper.

He stood now in front of the building they kept the boy in, going on the second day of the recess Levi's dark circles under his eyes had only worsened with the past day of reading and lack of sleep. He was back to his casual attire though again with the lack of support around his neglected ankle left him with a mild limp. The stress the short man harbored hardly helped though he refused to let that much show. Gaining a few salutes, he briskly walked down another flight of stairs, with soldiers at every other turn he attempted to make his limp less noticeable. The heavy door that waited at the bottom of the steps was opened for him, leading him into another large room with an equally large cell. bigger then Petra's he noted. "Yeager."  he waited, watching the cell with an intensity that only Levi could muster. He didn't waste much time as he stepped closer. "It's me. brush that filth off of you and stand attention" he waited. Though he could almost feel time ebbing as he watched the boy in front of him. He allowed himself to pause,  gathering carefully at how he wanted to word what he was going to say.

"Petra is alive. Shes the only survivor of the squad." he began, pausing once again to allow the boy to register his words. Though this didn't last long as he planned to deliver his intentions quickly. "Shes been.." Levi paused involuntarily, clearing his throat for a moment before standing more ridged then before "Petra's been arrested for being a traitor, for murder and i'm sure plenty of other shit she didn't do. Because she survived and you were captured." he waited again, taking his eyes off Eren and focusing on something else. "What I need from you is what you saw kid. Any information you have." Levi finally, and slowly turned his attention back to the Titan shifting soldier, his gaze getting darker and harder. "Her life is on the fucking line here, give me something to work with Eren."

He fully understood why he was incarcerated after the 57th Expedition, but why it had to be for so long was something he didn't understand. They had originally only said a week, but then they came and told him he would be locked up for longer, that something else came up and needed to be dealt with even before his own second trial. Eren had tried to ask what it was, but they refused to tell him. It was either that, or they were simply hiding it from him.

The young teen tried not to think too much on the death of his squad, either. But with all the time he had alone and the lack of visits from his own friends due to how uptight they were about visits from anybody not a high-ranking officer or legitimate family, all he could think about was that. He would often wake in a cold sweat, and tears streaming down his face weren't exactly uncommon either. Eren didn't even know if the bodies were recovered, but as far as he had known, they were dropped, even the squad's.

Eren's head snapped up and he was out of his own thoughts quickly when the door on the other side of the room opened and a familiar voice echoed in the silence. He practically sprang up from the cot he was sitting on, shifting to stand in a salute. "Captain!" He secretly wished Levi had more information detailing his own trial, but his salute slowly fell at the information he was brought instead. The words 'Petra was alive' echoed in his head and she was the only survivor of Squad Levi. "I..." He muttered, tears stinging at his eyes as his captain continued. But none of it was what he expected and he only assumed this was why his own trial was being postponed. Shaking his head, his gaze turned downwards. "I...could have saved them all." His words were quiet, but his gaze turned back to Levi. At his request, more like a plea for information, Eren looked elsewhere in the room. He didn't have much he remembered, except for the stance the Female Titan went into before he went unconscious. But that was barely anything to go off of.

"I...I'm sorry, captain. But I...I don't have much to go off of." He balled his hand into a fist shortly, blinking slowly before another thought hit him. He himself might not have enough information, but he knew who else would. "Armin. Armin Arlert. He...he told me that he had a better interaction with the Female Titan. If the Female Titan is a Titan Shifter like I am, there might be a way to disconnect Petra from that if you figure out who it is." Eren moved his arm to scratch the back of his head. "But I'm not entirely sure how that would work out." He said that part quietly, looking back at Levi.

He hadn't moved an inch, in fact he almost had forgotten to breath until the boy actually gave him some information. He had a name, of another. The soldier mentioned he barely remembered, with the swell of new recruits to the survey corps and the expedition underway he hardly had any time to actually learn the names of the individuals.   Levi watched Eren for another moment before a long sigh followed, the exhale was the only notable silence that had settled between the two. "Armin Arlert then."  he tested the name, he was never good at remembering or saying names to begin with. The corporal stood ridged, getting his information he really had no other reason to stay much longer though it was obvious enough the young soldier was affected just as greatly by the loss of the squad. "You've done your part, the deaths of the rest of the squad cannot be singled on one person. If you're sitting locked up with the same worry then your shit's going to come out shaking." he turned, walking back towards the door he came though before stopping slightly. "take it from me Yeager, all you can do now is focus on whats ahead, if you want to help anyone, don't dwell on whats happened" Levi didn't have much left for the boy, With Petra being the main focus of everyone's attention it was looking like Eren was going to be locked away until it passed. He left through the heavy doors, without much else for the Shifter.

-*-

It had been several weeks since Levi had visited the actual headquarters of the survey corps. Spending his time at the other location for Petra's sake since their return and for the fact he was on leave due to his injury. His uniform boots were more stiff then his casual shoes which left more support for his still healing ankle, the stress he attempted to repress hardly helped the healing process but he was too busy to simply sit down and rest. He came up on the large eating area of the HQ rather quickly despite his hidden limp, after having to circle the building twice to find where this Armin had even been. Pushing the large wooden doors open, soldiers bustled to their seats to sit with comrades, others sat and distanced themselves, it wasn't very full but more then Levi was comfortable with.

He cleared his throat, loud enough to almost stop all the soldiers which quickly gave their full attention to the man at the front of the room. He looked out, his expression hardly changing "Arlert. Armin Arlert." there was a dull whisper among the soldiers as they looked to who was next to them and then around the room. Levi waited, his fingers impatiently drumming at his side before tightly balling into a fist. No less then a moment passed when a boy stood, it was then Levi  recognized the blonde with the timid eyes. "Here sir." the corporal wasted no time briskly making his way across the room, it was then he noticed who was seated next to Armin. Ackerman, he remembered that one specifically she had a strong attachment to Eren. He noticed how she watched him, then quickly said something to Armin, who looked down and quickly shook his head before Levi made it to the table. "I-is there something wrong?" the voice was soft and unsure and the confusion was clear on the boy's face. "Yeager says you know a bit of information." the boy still looked unsure, "..Eren?" Levi noted that Mikasa was tugging on Armin's pants he also chose to ignore her. "information sir?" the corporal only nodded, giving a glance to the glaring girl staring up at him. "We can discuss this on the way there, unless you plan on standing there with your mouth open. Follow me." he heard shuffling as he turned, when suddenly it stopped. "Armin has a right to know what hes getting into" the lack of enthusiasm in the voice was that enough to match his own. Levi grunted, his fist grew tighter as he turned slowly. "Mikasa really its-.." though she stood now, almost challenging "and what about Eren, why is his trial being neglected?" she pressed, still gripping onto the blonde "Mikasa" he tried a pathetic attempt at a struggle but she held fast as her eyes never left the short man. "are you even doing anything to help him? where have you even been?" the conversation attracted attention  again as other soldiers around them turned to look. Armin noticed quickly and began to fidget again.

Levi's fist grew tighter until the ache finally registered and he relaxed, releasing a long awaited sigh. "Sit the fuck down Ackerman and try to keep up Arlert." he turned easily, not seemingly fazed much at all from the pressing of the younger soldier. There was more fumbling from behind until he heard quick footsteps fall in behind him. Levi didn't say anything to the boy until they were back outside, he slowed his pace in the slightest hearing the first sign of heavy breathing from the younger. "I want you to answer this question with everything you know. Leave nothing out. Do you understand?" glancing back he watched as the boy still looked confused but quickly nodded. "Tell me everything you know about the Female Titan."

Three days. She should have expected the trial to have a recess, but she didn't expect a full three days. But she understood why it was needed. Almost all of the evidence gathered was against her and no where near for her. But she trusted Levi. She trusted he would gather what information was necessary to prove her innocence, no matter at the cost. But again, the woman was alone in a dark and cold cell. The only thing she had to herself were her thoughts, which even she didn't want to listen to.

Even before the first day of her trial and after Levi had visited her, she noted there was something amiss. Despite her lack of sleep, she had an extra sense of fatigue about her and she was left more drained that she would have liked to admit. Coupled with frequent headaches, most of which she attributed to her lack of sleep and eating, she made her best attempts at ignoring it. The day before her trial, she found herself jumping from her sad excuse of a bed to empty whatever was in her stomach the night prior. The day of her trial, it happened a second time. The same day, she noted she missed her period. She even wanted to deny that, blame it on the stress from the expedition and being jailed. But two days into the extended recess, she couldn't. There wasn't any use of denying the facts, denying the fact she ended up pregnant. Her only worry was if she wasn't found innocent, would she even get an opportunity to tell Levi or would it just be another repeat of her parting letter to him.

Her gaze was trained on the ground as she was guided, a second time, to the courtroom. Her eyes lost their usual light, even more so than the first day of the trial. Her eyelids felt heavy and her eyes felt dry, from lack of sleep and the apparent endless tears she only shed in her cell. She didn't look up when the courtroom doors were opened, her gaze still trained downwards with her hair shielding her face. She didn't need to look up to tell the fact that the room was already filled with the same people from three days go; she would practically feel their eyes burning into her with their judging stares. Petra only stopped when the soldiers guiding her did the same, the woman kneeling on the cold marble floor without the soldiers pushing her down. She only the familiar pull of her arms being taken back and to be weighed down by a metal pole by her handcuffs. Petra didn't move any more than she had to, not shifting to look towards the side of the room that the Survey Corps sat on.

Hanji sat with her arms crossed, barely participating in the idle chatter of the rest of the Survey Corps. She glanced from Erwin to Levi and then to the other blonde that tagged along this time, Armin Arlert. Supposedly he knew information about the Female Titan they didn't yet possess, and if it proved to be accurate, it would likely be enough to prove Petra's innocence. But she sighed, looking forward when she heard the doors at the head of the room opened and the room fell silent. The squad leader watched the two soldiers from a few days previous bring Petra to the center, the woman quirking a brow when Petra knelt to the ground without the usuall pushiness of the soldiers. Leaning back into her seat, her attention turned to the Generalissimo at the familiar sound of a gaval hitting against wood.

The Generalissimo had his attention to the papers in front of him, even as Petra was brought into the room. He only looked up again when he heard metal slide against metal, noting that the woman was locked down until the trial would come to a conclusion. He sighed, adjusting in his seat and grabbing the gaval next to him, hitting it against the table to silence anymore stray whispers. "We won't be messing around and having childish arguments like the last time, I hope." Glancing from the Survey Corps and the Military Police, he leaned forward. "I won't be repeating the charges or conviction for Petra Ral a second time. But again, this court is still being held under military, not civilian, law. The final decision still comes down to me, but each of the Commanders now have updated reports of Petra's account of the 57th Expedition." Zackley blinked, his attention now fully on the Survey Corps. "I granted you a three day recess to re-evaluate your resources for this trial. If you have anything new, present it now." He leaned back again, glancing down at the small stack of papers in front of him before looking back to the Survey Corps.

An air of confidence circled around him as he entered the courtroom on the third day, a determined blonde in tow who also gave the occasional curious glance around the courtroom.  Levi walked fast past several soldiers to get to the survey corps side of the room, taking note Erwin and Hanji had already arrived and seated in the same spots as before. He glanced back at the boy with a grunt to get his attention before continuing. "you know what you're going to say, Armin?" he asked as they filed in behind the line, Erwin offered a slight smile to the boy who nodded to Levi's words "Yes sir." the whole courtroom murmured again from the three day recess, Levi left a chair between himself and Erwin for the young soldier before sitting down with a low sigh. The corporal's outlook on the trial was on a high note, the information Armin had was invaluable to the female titan's true identity as well as Petra's innocence. The boy had been briefed by himself, and then Erwin a few hours before the trial and Levi made it quite clear to Arlert what was riding on this. He might of scared him but he seen that to get the blonde prepared.

Most of the respective sides of the branches settled, though there was still a dull roar from conversations. Levi didn't say a word to Erwin, who was looking over his shoulder and speaking to another soldier. Arlert was quiet in his seat, Levi noted how the blonde wringed his hands subtly, though his face remained determined and calculating. When the courtroom doors opened the room hushed, all eyes on Petra as she re-entered. Levi expected a look, one he could return with assurance of his new find sitting next to him. But her eyes never lifted from their stare ahead, his hand gripped the arm of the chair he sat at, his semi-relaxed state tensing again as he leaned forward when she was tied down. Something wasn't right and it left him with an ache in his chest, had she given up hope on him already? Levi's mind drifted back to her outburst so many weeks ago it seemed and he wondered if she thought his promises empty again.

The gavel sound brought him out of his own mind trap, blinking to the generalissimo for a moment, face dropping back to a hard and cold stare, the light mood he carried in now lost in trying to peg Petra's feelings and why she hardly allowed him a glance. Erwin cleared his throat at the words of the generalissimo's words of arguments, glancing to Levi only for his stare not to be met at all. The commander stood when their side of the room was addressed nodding to the head of the court "The survey corps has a witness from the 57th expedition who had direct contact with the Female Titan on multiple occasions and has valuable information not only to this trial but to humanities war against the titans.  I give the floor to Armin Arlert." there was a hush between the soldiers to the information, Levi glanced to the young soldier before his gaze returned to Petra which was where it stayed. Armin rose, the fumbling in his hands stopped all together as he quickly saluted followed by a nod to the generalissimo. "I was assigned to the Relay in the long range scouting formation" he paused as he thought back to the time, though there was a slight cringe. "I noticed the first aberrant flare, a black flare, fired by squad leader Ness, he and another soldier took care of the titan. It was then when I first saw her. She was running fast..faster then I ever seen any Titan move before. Squad leader Ness...he didn't want it to reach me and attempted to use the same tactic he used on the aberrant...The female titan was completely sentient..they were both killed in seconds and she wasn't stopped at all." Armin let out a shaky sigh, finally letting his salute fall and hands resting at his sides. "It was then I knew, I knew she was like Eren, She was intelligent and there was someone, a human controlling the titan. I tried to reroute then, but she was so fast she caught up to my horse in seconds. She purposefully knocked me off my horse..she came up to me when I hit the ground, I thought for sure she was going to kill me like squad leader and that soldier. She..pulled my traveling cloak hood back, she..looked at me. She stared at me, then ran off again, it was like..like she was examining me..to see who I was."   the courtroom erupted into whispers and grumbles from the other soldiers. Armin glanced to Levi but received no response, then to Erwin who only nodded for him to continue.

"Another soldier, Reiner Braun recovered my horse and we tailed the female Titan for a few yards. Jean Kirschtein joined us. I decided the Female Titan was after someone at this point..I figured it was Eren, the three of us realized we were each told differently where squad Levi was in the formation." Armin's face became more determined as he looked towards Petra in the middle of the room then to the generalissimo. "The Female Titan was just as confused as we were to their actual location, she was searching for them. If I may sir, I read over the charges Miss Ral is being accused of it seems to me if she had an affiliation with the Female Titan, why would she have searched through our formation for Eren, it would be a waste of time when Miss Ral could have told her of squad Levi's location instead." the courtroom broke out into a series of whispers again. Levi, for a moment, took his eyes from Petra to glance at the other soldiers for the first time they seemed unsure of their own conclusions. Armin seemed to hesitate for a moment before looking up again "Reiner, Jean and myself later engaged the female Titan, I was thrown from my horse a second time..Reiner and Jean attempted to attack the female titan, she was going to crush them. I shouted then, I lied and said Eren had been attacked...in our trainee class his nickname was Suicidal Bastard it made her pause all together and gave Jean a chance to escape. Only the 104th would know that." he waited again as the whispers began to get louder, soldiers were nervously looking back and forth to eachother as if their neighbor had an answer. Armin finally continued "The Female Titan was someone from the 104th trainee squad graduates" Levi grunted once the boy was finished, he glanced back at Erwin for a moment before staying to Petra. He knew Armin was leaving out a detail, he already knew who the Female Titan was but Erwin wanted to keep that from the trial, some plan he had in mind, Levi didn't question it now, from the sounds of the courtroom the weight was beginning to lift from Petra. His dull eyes slowly moved to look at the Generalissimo, but it was his verdict was the one that counted.

The Generalissimo looked to the commander of the Survey Corps when he stood, the man nodding as his attention shifted to the short blonde now seated with the branch. He barely recognized the boy from Eren's trial, one of the new soldiers from the most recent trainee squads. Again he leaned forward to listen to his account of the 57th Expedition. He hoped it would, in fact, give humanity a slight advantage to the war.

He listened to the account with interest, occasionally taking down notes when he could. His attention fully shifted to the blonde when the mention of Petra's charges were brought up, the man nodding slowly. Looking back down in front of him, he sifted through the multitude of papers on the wooden desk, removing a copy of the report that exempt the woman on trial from all reports and interrogations involving the 57th Expedition due to mental trauma. He adjusted his glasses, lifting his gaze back to the Survey Corps. "You can sit, Armin." His eyes shifted to Erwin next. "The information given was invaluable, to the trial and humanity." Zackley gave a short nod, putting the paper he held back down. "I have a copy of Petra Ral's exemption from reports and interrogations due to mental trauma. I don't entirely believe someone suffering from this expedition would have taken such action to either be directly or indirectly the cause for the death of an entire squad. With Arlert's account taken into consideration..." The Generalissimo sighed, his eyes shifting to look at the woman in the center of the room. "Petra Ral. I find you innocent from all charges against you in this trial. You will be going back with the Survey Corps and your name will be cleared as soon as possible." He glanced between each of the branches of the military. "Commander Erwin, you will be able to sign for her release in the room behind this one, and then take her from here straight back to the HQ she's stationed at." He nodded and sighed slightly, motioning for the soldiers to come forward and take Petra into the backroom.

The woman barely moved from her position on the floor, her gaze remaining on the floor. Her eyes only shifted again to look over at the shorter blonde on the Survey Corps side of the room, blinking slowly. She barely recognized the name; Eren barely talked about his friends to her or the rest of the squad, but she did remember an 'Armin'. Listening carefully to his account of the mission, her hazel eyes turned forward again to look at the solid wood of the large desk at the head of the room. Petra continued to listen to the account from the Expedition, her gaze only shifting again to look up at the Generalissimo as Armin finished. His verdict now what was mattered now, the woman shifting slightly. Listening to the account from the blonde, she glanced to Levi shortly before returning her eyes to the head of the room. She realized it was likely him who was able to get a source with such value in the amount of time given.

Her eyes went back to the Generalissimo when he said her name, the woman staring when the verdict of her innocence was given. She didn't know what to exactly feel, pressing her lips into a line to hide a slight smile that threatened to appear on her face. Turning her head slightly to look at Levi, she let her smile slip momentarily, ignoring the slight sting in her eyes. She only looked away when she felt the weight keeping her back be lifted, the soldiers from earlier bringing her to her feet to take her into the room behind the courtroom. Upon entering the room, one of the soldiers worked on removing her handcuffs, the woman's eyes resting on the door.

The courtroom was filled with silent discussions on the new information brought about, Levi's attention had fallen back on Petra he felt the blonde sit back down next to him though he made no motion to look. The grip on the chair arms tightened when Petra looked at him, his eyes narrowing further for a moment before she once again looked away. He hadn't a clue what she had been thinking try as he might to figure it out she wasn't letting him in. He could feel Armin shifting nervously next to him, the blonde had been determined from the start to help as much as he could with the information he had, it was one of the few things Levi appreciated about the timid soldier. When the Generalissimo began to speak all eyes fell on the head of the court, Levi leaned back in his chair to watch with indifference as he spoke and was looking for just one word and he could truly relax, the word came with whispers and shuffling throughout the courtroom. Petra was found innocent. Levi sighed, it was a long exhale of air that felt like his lungs had been completely emptied. The Survey Corps were the loudest after the verdict was said, words of We knew it all along! or of course one of ours isn't a traitor..I bet its someone in the Military Police! Levi grunted, his eyebrows knitting together in irritation, The only two members of the Survey Corps that were any help had been Hanji and Armin, even it's commander was useless.

Levi allowed a quick glance to the man, Erwin sat back in his chair ignoring the commotion of his soldiers behind him. His face was stern and ridged as ever but his muscles were clearly relaxed and eyes closed. The corporal's attention finally rested on Petra, just in time to catch the smile that was sent his way before the soldiers began to move her to the backroom. A smile was something he could decipher and something he wished to see for days now. Petra was relived and dare he consider it she was happy. He thought back to the letter she had left him the day she was jailed. Levi let his tense shoulders finally droop at the idea she wasn't having those feelings anymore and that made him truly relax. "Levi" The voice broke him out of his slight daydream, glancing up to the commander who was now at his side "come with me." Erwin began his walk towards the back room and Levi was up in an instant, though he winced slightly at the shock in his ankle he quickly brushed it off. Glancing back to the blonde boy, he nodded "Good Job Arlert. Stay with that until you're ordered otherwise." Levi nodded to Hanji before quickly turning. He imagined he could have said more to the soldier for what he had done but all of that could come later.

Erwin was waiting by the door when he walked up, the taller man was always hard to read especially now though he didn't look as grim as usual. The commander opened the door for himself and promptly walked in, leaving it open for Levi who followed without hesitation. The two soldiers that had brought Petra stayed until they arrived nodding before leaving out the same door and closing it behind them. Levi looked at her then, seeing her shackled and chained back in the center of the courtroom had plagued him for days, kept him from sleep he refused anyways so he relished in how his view wasn't obscured by bars or restraints. Levi stepped around Erwin who made no moves to stop him, he only turned to the desk that was to the side in the small room to look over the papers that were no doubt her release forms. He took another step towards Petra, his pace gaining in speed until he was upon her, he made no moves to hide his relief as his arms wound tightly around her, bringing her against him. Levi took her in, burying himself against her in show of the countless times he couldn't the past few days. Running a hand down her back, Levi leaned back in the slightest his lips brushing against her cheek and then to her lips in a slow kiss. Erwin being there hardly stopped any of his actions, the corporal was sure the generalissimo himself could walk in and it wouldn't detach him from Petra, though Erwin kept his back facing them as he busied himself with the paperwork. Levi's lips only parted from hers for a moment before he found them again, before he finally pulled away though hardly separating them at all "I want to hear you say it." he muttered, his lips trailing around to her ear in gentle nudges and whispers "Tell me now what I had to read before, Petra." he insisted, his face for the moment resting against hers.

Hanji's expression hardly changed over the announcement of Petra's innocence, but scanning the courtroom, she couldn't hold back the small smirk from forming on their lips. Only days before were the very same people practically dehumanizing Petra for her supposed treason against humanity. But they were all proven wrong in only a matter of minutes and she couldn't find it in herself to be anything but pleased with the development. Looking up as Erwin and Levi stood to leave the room, the way Levi referred to her made her frown deeply, the woman crossing her arms. Glancing to the young blonde she was left with, she sighed. "He's more grateful than he's letting on right now." The woman gave a small nod, turning to look forward again.

Her hazel eyes barely shifted from the door of the room, already feeling more alert and awake than she had back in her cell. The woman's gaze only shifted momentarily as the door opened again, Erwin stepping into the room to fill out her release forms on the desk in the room. Watching the door again, she could barely control her smile as Levi stepped in only seconds after the commander. Glancing to the soldiers who were still in the room, they left as quickly as the other two had entered, the door closing behind them to signal their exit.

Petra nearly mirrored Levi's movements, taking steps to meet him in the middle. With very little hesitation, she wound her arms around his neck, her hands gripping onto his jacket as if she would be taken from him again. Her face was buried in between his neck and shoulder, the woman only shifting when Levi leaned back. She felt his lips against her cheek lightly, smiling lightly when their lips met with her returning the affection immediately. She took a small breath when he parted, although it was short-lived when they met again in a second kiss, her smile growing in the slightest. She listened to his words when he spoke quietly, her grip tightening when she felt his face against hers. Burying her face into his shoulder for a moment, she lifted her head to place a small kiss on his cheek before responding. "I love you." Petra responded quietly, the small smile from only seconds ago returning.

Levi had filtered anything but Petra from his senses, both of his arms still refusing to allow her away from him. He watched her intently, still waiting for the response to grace his ears when she leaned to his shoulder. Levi instinctively moved a hand to her hair, running his fingers through the warm strands he had missed in their days apart. When Petra moved again he stopped, allowing his hand to fall back to his embrace, dull eyes glancing to the side as she kissed his cheek when they widened in the slightest before softening to a look of relief. He imagined her voice repeat that letter back to him many times in his own mind, more importantly that particular part he so desperately wanted to hear from her lips. Levi concluded as he finally heard Petra confide her love to him, it was far better then anything he had imagined to keep him leveled. The man sighed, a relaxed sigh as his eyes fell to her lips, the smile they turned to before leaning in as her words still soothed his ears. Pressing his lips to hers in the slightest before he trailed a gentle whisper around to her ear. "And I love you..Petra"  muttering softly against her ear, arms pulling her closer against him "For longer then I realized.." a soft kiss followed under her ear, softer mumbles of 'I love you's' followed across each cheek to her other ear which he continued the same treatment of his momentary adoration.

After a moment he pulled back, only slightly to get a better look at her. His eyes, still holding a flat gaze, were alight with relief that had been repressed for days. Though slowly, he came down from his high, eyes turning concerned as he examined  the woman in front of him. "How do you feel...have you eaten?" his eyes fell to her clothes, a hand gently traveling up her arm then down again, resting at her side. "They probably gave you shit on a plate anyways..I wouldn't blame you if you haven't" Levi grumbled at the memory of seeing her in the cell and his grip tightened. Levi only wanted now to get her back to the headquarters, back to where she was familiar with and keep her to himself. It was selfish, that much he knew but he wanted to allow himself for once to be as selfish as he could be. "Once we get you away from this bullshit and to the headquarters, I'll take care of you." he muttered the last bit into her neck as he pulled her against him again. Food would be priority then run a long bath for her and then rest all of which he would promptly see to. A light shuffle followed from behind them as Erwin neared the end of the paper work, Levi hardly glanced back sighing against Petra, his hand still lightly rubbing her side.
